Intel in talks with Apple, Windows over use ‘Medfield’ chips in mobile devices London, Jan 12: US computer chip giant Intel has said that the company is in talks with Apple and other mobile phone manufacturers about the use of Intel''s chips in mobile handsets.
Dave Whalen, vice president of Intel’s architecture group, said that the company was “talking to everybody” and that they had spoken to Apple among other manufacturers about using the company’s ‘Medfield’ chips in mobile devices.
Apple shifted its computers to Intel chips a number of years ago, but its iPhone and iPad devices use proprietary processors.
Intel announced yesterday at the Consumer Electronics Show that its first mobile phones would be launched with Lenovo in China and by Motorola elsewhere, likely in the second and third quarters of the year respectively.
According to the Telegraph, Whalen also characterized mobile phones as a logical extension for Intel, and said mobile manufacturers would be finalizing consistent marketing plans shortly.
“We don’t see smartphones as a unique category. We see this as computing coming down into a different category and we have 40+ years of experience of computing,” the paper quoted him, as saying. |
